HAPPENINGS IN SAN JUAN DEL SUR

San Juan del Sur has seen many civic improvements and infrastructure plans come to fruition in recent months, including…

The road leading to Maderas and Majagual is
now paved for the first few kilometers

We got some new roads!  A few kilometers of road has been paved going north of town from the Alcaldia (City hall) to the start of the Chocolata highway.   This stretch of road was notorious for washouts and we’re excited to see how the work holds up during the rainy season.  South of town, surveyors have been busy…surveying the road.  Some dirt has been moved around and one can only hope that rumors of the Coastal Highway are starting to come to fruition.  With a new cell tower down at Playa El Coco, and a new boardwalk in Ostional, the plans to open up our tourism corridor to Costa Rica are coming along.   One source tells us a border crossing will be opened later this year, but let’s not count our chickens just yet.

Jesus statue stands eight stories tall!

We got a brand new Jesus!  That’s right folks, San Juan del Sur is now home to the second tallest Jesus statue in the world, behind Christ The Redeemer in Rio.  Our Jesus is located on the bluff at the top of Pacific Marlin.  Looking down, blessing the fisherman, and generally chilling out, Jesus provides visitors with a fun hike to his feet and great postcard photo ops!  The statue took almost a year to complete and was finished just after Easter.

New space-age plastic money in Nicaragua

We got new money!  A few weeks ago, Nicaragua released new 10 and 20 cordoba notes into circulation.  The notes are made of a space-age plastic and are near indestructible.  Great news for surfers, the bills are waterproof!

This cruise ship is docked in the Bay of
San Juan del Sur

We got more sandals with socks!  Yes folks, the cruise ship season has come and gone, with thousands of new visitors experiencing the fun and sun of San Juan del Sur and the pacific coast of Nicaragua.  This year for the first time some cruise ships docked for 24-hours, giving travelers ample time to walk about town and spend time relaxing on the beaches.

IN THE NEWS

Nicaragua continues to get great press as a growing tourism destination.  Two prestigious publications: The Wall Street Journal and Travel + Leisure have recently run stories on Nicaragua and specifically San Juan del Sur.  Tourism is steadily rising in the area and the world’s perception of Nicaragua is changing.  Take a look at these articles.
