Managua

Managua is the capital city of Nicaragua and has a population of around 1.7 million. The city is located at the southwestern shore of the Lake of Managua. Managua has been rated the safest capital in Central America in surveys by INTERPOL, and the United Nations. San Juan del Sur

San Juan del Sur is the epicenter of beach tourism and foreign real estate investment in Nicaragua. The town itself is located on a large horseshoe bay along the southern portion of the pacific coast of Nicaragua. The bay provides a natural harbor and is home to fishing boats, sail boats and private yachts. The beach in San Juan del Sur is a three kilometer stretch of sand nestled in between two volcanic headlands providing an incredible tropical setting.

Granada

Granada was founded on the shores of Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca) by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524. This makes Granada, Nicaragua one of the oldest settlements in Central America. During the colonial period Granada became one of the most important harbors in Central America. Granada had ports on the Atlantic, through Lake Nicaragua and on the San Juan River.

Leon

The original city of Leon was founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524, 20 miles east of present-day Leon. An eruption of Volcano Momotombo in 1610 caused serious damage to the city and it’s inhabitants decided to move the city to its current location. Leon was founded near the indigenous settlement of Sutiava. This neighborhood still exists and retains much of its indigenous character.

Ometepe Island

Ometepe, which sits in the middle of the Lake of Nicaragua is the largest lake island in the world. Ometepe gets its name from the Nahuatl words: Ome, which signifies two and Tepetl or mountains, meaning two mountains. The island is made up of two volcanoes: Concepcion and Madera. Concepcion is an active cone shaped volcano located on the northwest part of Ometepe. Madera makes up the southeast portion of Ometepe. Madera is dormant and covered by rainforest.

Tola

Tola refers to a region of the Pacific coast of Nicaragua north of San Juan del Sur. The region starts with Brito beach and goes all the way to the turtle reserve at Chacocente. Tola is home to some of the best surf beaches in all of Nicaragua. This stretch of Nicaraguan pacific coast is famous for not only it’s great surf but also the dramatic coastline and is a region that is great for someone who likes to explore on their own.
